When Plaque hardens and becomes calculus it causes irritation to the gums. This body’s response to this is inflammation. This first results in gingivitis, but if left untreated can lead to bone loss. When bone loss occurs the disease has now progressed into periodontitis. Periodontitis is a leading cause of tooth loss.
